Writing a Dissertation - Points to Consider
Writing a Dissertation - Points to ConsiderThe skill of writing a dissertation is hard work. There are many points to think about when you have completed a dissertation and it is important to be sure that the ideas you have are coherent and that they relate to your topic. A good thesis advisor will guide you in this process, and they can give you much needed advice about how to organize your ideas and make them flow correctly.First, consider the length of your dissertation. In many cases, it is necessary to write a paper for a credit rating or to get an advanced degree. Do not limit yourself to a time frame. Do not underestimate the time it takes to research your topic and to organize your thoughts. Writing a dissertation should be a creative and challenging process that you enjoy.Writing a dissertation is different than writing a journal article or a book. One advantage is that it does not have to be a perfect presentation and you do not have to use scientific jargon or formulas. An other benefit is that the presentation is as close to perfect as possible.Keep your essay simple. Although your dissertation will contain much information, you do not want it to appear as if you wrote it by just guessing. Your thoughts should be written out rather than simply placed in the essay without any supporting facts. Try to use paragraphs that do not contain a lot of talking heads, lists, and details.Use headings and bullet points to organize your factual information. Always use proper punctuation and avoid double and triple spaced. It is best to maintain all sentences within a paragraph in all caps. Finally, use ellipses to separate paragraphs. Never place commas at the end of a sentence, as this seems to be a universal mistake.Format your chapter headings and subheadings to make the first two and third lines on each page appear in a logical order and in your main body of text. Write your title at the top of the page and follow it with your first paragraph, then the second, and so on. The last paragraph should contain the abstract of your topic. Be sure to include your name in your title and to make the title relevant to your topic. Try to avoid using words that are too general such as 'it'the.'Once you have written the first paragraph, you should consider formatting the remainder of your essay. This is done by highlighting your paragraph, putting a bold face and striking all of the bullets. Do not type a lot of writing, but instead use short paragraphs. Finish the second paragraph by putting in your subheadings and then add the third paragraph. Do not forget to cite your sources in your dissertation. If your writing has been submitted to a university, your advisor will want to see a proofreading and editing job, which is actually called revision. There are some mistakes that can be corrected in a proofreading job, while other corrections may require the use of an editor. Proofreading is helpful for students who may have difficulties with their writing skills and for a dissertation adviser who is interested in making sure that the dissertation is prepared well.
